As a handheld, it's one of the best fighters out there. I'm sure PSP will get something that will totally blow this out of the water; but for now, KOF: Extreme is king.

Besides the choppy animation and poor framerate, The King of Fighters Extreme is a great addition to the N-Gage library. It offers a lot of the fun and excitement found in other versions found on other platforms, and being able to play it against others wirelessly only adds to the fun.

The completeness of the game is great, too, and all of the modes -- including the Bluetooth multiplayer -- give this package some real value.

Has all the makings of a great portable fighting game. Unfortunately, a consistently sluggish frame rate seriously hurts the experience.

Fans of the series or even just gamers who want a decent 2D beat 'em up on the go will relish this title. For a handheld game it offers more than enough gameplay, with all the characters, combinations to learn, unlockables, difficulty settings and multiplayer, more than enough to keep you busy.

It's a bare-bones but enjoyable 2D fighter that, although it runs just a tad bit slow, is still fun to play and worth owning if you don't have a Game Boy SP.

Only consider if you like your action slow, pixelated, and old...school. [Holiday 2004, p.142]
